Showcasing My Journey as a Game Level Designer

Game design is a fascinating field that combines creativity, technology, and storytelling. As a game level designer, I have had the privilege of bringing virtual worlds to life. My journey has been filled with challenges, learning experiences, and moments of pure joy. In this blog post, I will share my experiences, insights, and the lessons I have learned along the way.


The Beginning of My Journey


My creative path began in architecture, a field where I learned to balance creativity with precision, and where every idea had to serve both form and function. Studying architecture gave me the foundation for design thinking—how to shape spaces, guide movement, and create experiences that people interact with every day. It was during this time that I developed a strong appreciation for detail, proportion, and the way environments influence human behavior.

For four years, I worked as an architect, bringing concepts to life through projects that demanded both artistic vision and technical problem-solving. I worked with industry-standard software such as Revit, 3ds Max, Rhino, V-Ray, Corona, and Unreal Engine, tools that not only allowed me to design structures but also gave me a deeper understanding of visualization, lighting, and spatial storytelling. My architectural work taught me how to design with intent—whether it was for beauty, functionality, or the overall experience of a space.

Over time, I realized that what fascinated me most wasn’t just how people used spaces in the real world, but how worlds could be imagined, built, and experienced interactively. This realization sparked my transition into game design, where the boundaries of creativity expand beyond physical limitations. In games, environments don’t just exist to be observed—they become part of the story, part of the challenge, and part of the player’s journey.

This passion led me to study Game Design at Toronto Film School, where I am now honing my skills in interactive storytelling, gameplay design, and immersive world-building. Here, I’ve begun to bridge my architectural background with my new path—combining an eye for structure and design with the artistry of creating engaging, playable spaces.

Looking forward, my goal is to grow as a Game Level Designer—crafting worlds that are not only visually compelling but also intuitive, immersive, and memorable for players. I want to design environments that tell stories on their own, guide players naturally through gameplay, and leave a lasting impression long after the game is over.


Building My Portfolio


As I progressed through my studies, I focused on building a strong portfolio. I created various levels for different genres, including platformers, shooters, and puzzle games. Each project was an opportunity to experiment with new ideas and techniques.


I also participated in game jams, which are events where developers create games in a short time frame. These events pushed me to think creatively and work under pressure. I remember one game jam where I designed a level inspired by a dream I had. The level was surreal and abstract, and it received positive feedback. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of creativity.


Landing My First Job


After graduating, I applied for internships and entry-level positions. It was a challenging process, filled with rejections and self-doubt. However, I remained persistent. I continued to refine my portfolio and network with industry professionals.




The Importance of Collaboration


Working in a team environment taught me the value of collaboration. As a level designer, I often worked closely with artists, programmers, and sound designers. Each team member brought unique skills and perspectives.


I remember a project where I collaborated with an artist to create a visually stunning level. We brainstormed ideas and iterated on designs together. The result was a level that not only played well but also looked beautiful. This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork in game development.


Overcoming Challenges


Every journey has its challenges, and mine was no different. There were times when I faced creative blocks or struggled to meet deadlines. I learned to manage my time effectively and prioritize tasks.


One particular challenge was designing a level that balanced difficulty and fun. I wanted players to feel challenged but not frustrated. I spent hours playtesting and tweaking the level. Eventually, I found the right balance, and the level became one of the highlights of the game. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability.


Embracing Feedback


Feedback is a crucial part of the design process. I learned to embrace constructive criticism and use it to improve my work. Early in my career, I was hesitant to share my designs. I feared negative feedback, but I soon realized that it was an opportunity for growth.


I remember presenting a level design to my team. I was nervous, but their feedback was incredibly helpful. They pointed out areas for improvement and offered suggestions. I took their advice to heart and made significant changes. The final product was much better than my original design. This experience reinforced the idea that feedback is a gift.


The Role of Storytelling


As a level designer, I understand the importance of storytelling in games. A well-designed level can enhance the narrative and immerse players in the experience. I strive to create levels that not only challenge players but also tell a story.


For example, in one project, I designed a level set in a post-apocalyptic world. I used environmental storytelling to convey the history of the setting. Players could discover clues about what happened through the level design. This approach added depth to the gameplay and engaged players on a deeper level.


Staying Current in the Industry


The gaming industry is constantly evolving, and it is essential to stay current with trends and technologies. I make it a point to attend conferences, workshops, and online courses. These opportunities allow me to learn from industry leaders and connect with fellow designers.


I also follow blogs, podcasts, and YouTube channels dedicated to game design. These resources provide valuable insights and inspiration. Staying informed helps me adapt my skills and stay relevant in a competitive field.


Looking Ahead


As I continue my journey as a game level designer, I am excited about the future. I have many goals, including working on larger projects and exploring new genres. I want to push the boundaries of level design and create experiences that resonate with players.


I also hope to mentor aspiring designers. I believe in giving back to the community that has supported me. Sharing knowledge and experiences can help others on their journeys.

My journey as a game level designer has been a rewarding experience. I have learned valuable lessons about creativity, collaboration, and perseverance. Each project has shaped my skills and understanding of game design.
